Best Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution

Your carpets and rugs can take a beating from your kids or pets, so they must be cleaned regularly to keep them smelling and looking great. Keeping your carpets cleaned shouldn’t cost a small fortune. Luckily, we’ve rounded up some great homemade carpet cleaning solutions. These recipes will allow you to save some money but also know what exactly is in the cleaning solution that you put on your carpets.

The First Step

If you have a stain or spill, do not rub them. Instead, you will want to get a clean cloth and blot at the spill, starting from the edges and working inward. This will keep the spill from working further into the carpet fibers. Also, make sure you vacuum your carpet thoroughly before using any carpet cleaning to help remove dirt and debris before using the cleaning solution.

Carpet Cleaning Spray

Each carpet and rug will have its own needs, so here is the best carpet cleaning spray. You can make this with just a few household items. This is great when you need to clean a small area. Always test the solution on a small area of your carpet that won’t be noticeable if it doesn’t agree with your carpet.

Carpet cleaning spray recipe:

  • One glass spray bottle
  • One cup of white vinegar
  • 2 cups of water
  • Two teaspoons salt
  • 15 drops of lavender oil

To create this carpet-cleaning spray solution, you will need a clean glass spray bottle. You will want to add the vinegar and water first, then salt and oil. Mix thoroughly and spray where you need. Allow your carpet or rug to dry thoroughly, and then vacuum your carpet to remove any residue. Make sure you mix the solution before spraying each time.

Homemade Spot Cleaner

Suppose you need a different spot treatment to handle a tough stain from your children or pets. This one is for you. As with any new product, always test a small carpet sample just in case of a reaction.

Carpet spot cleaning recipe:

  • ¼ cup salt
  • ¼ cup borax
  • ¼ cup vinegar

You will want to mix all ingredients to create a thick paste. You will need to rub the paste on the stain using your gloved fingers or a brush. You will leave it for several hours before vacuuming up the residue. Make sure you don’t leave anything behind, so you will want to vacuum the spot several times.

Best Pet Stain Remover

Pets are great, but accidents can still happen to the best of them. Pet urine has a specific smell and can get set into carpet fibers, so you must clean it up immediately. This is the best recipe to help eliminate pet stains and odor with pet urine.

Pet stain cleaning recipe:

  • One large glass bowl
  • Two cups vinegar
  • Two cups of warm water
  • Four tablespoons of baking soda
  • One glass spray bottle

Mix all ingredients well in your large glass bowl, ensuring your baking soda is dissolved. Pour into your glass spray bottle and then spray onto the soiled area. Allow the solution to sit in the area for at least 10 minutes. Use a soft cloth to pull any extra liquid from the area. You can also sprinkle the baking soda directly on the affected area and pour the vinegar and water directly over the affected area. After allowing it to sit for at least 5 minutes, you can use a soft cloth to pull the extra liquid from the area.

Best Carpet Cleaning Solution

This is the best homemade carpet cleaning solution you can use with a carpet cleaning machine. The best part is that the directions for this solution create a full gallon, but you only need 2 ounces per carpet cleaning fill, so you can do your whole home and have more left over for next time.

Carpet cleaning solution recipe:

  • One-gallon plastic or glass cleaner
  • Funnel
  • One cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • ⅛ cup dish of liquid
  • One tablespoon Oxiclean
  • ½ cup fabric softener
  • Water

To create this solution, you will want to take your 1-gallon container and put the funnel on top to ensure nothing is spilled. Add the hydrogen peroxide, dish liquid, Oxiclean, and fabric softener to your container. Fill your container the rest of the way with water, and then mix well. When ready to use your steam cleaner, you will mix your solution and add just 2 ounces to your carpet cleaner, then use your machine as normal. Of course, as with all new solutions, test it on your carpet before using it across the entire carpet or rug.

How Often Should I Clean My Carpets?

Many factors can affect the frequency you should clean your rugs and carpets. However, the average household should vacuum their rugs and carpets in high-traffic areas 1-2 times per week. You will want to clean any dirty spots as they happen or as you notice them. You should deep clean your carpets with a carpet cleaning solution every 3-6 months, depending upon their usage, pets, children, spills, etc.

The best way to keep your rugs and carpets smelling fresh and looking clean is to make cleaning them part of your routine. Don’t allow spills and stains to sit on your carpet for long periods without cleaning them. The longer they sit, the harder they can be to clean out.

Best for Family Homes

Not only will these homemade recipes save you money, but they all use products you are likely familiar with. These natural and safe solutions for kids and pets can help you relax about what your family comes into contact with.

Additionally, people with asthma and allergies may have difficulty using certain cleaning products. When creating your cleaners, you can ensure using the best ingredients and not sacrificing your breathing for a clean carpet.
